Phonics

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.  Phonics is integral to the development of early reading and writing.

Children at Byerley Park Primary School begin their phonic learning in Reception. They continue to develop their and practice their phonic skills as they move into Key Stage One, learning and applying their increasing phonic knowledge throughout Year 1.

At the end of Year 1 the children, pupils will take part in the Phonics Screening Check (PSC). Introduced by the Department of Education in 2011, the PSC is way to assess achievement in phonics.

In Year 2 phonics teaching continues and, where there is a need, children in Key Stage Two may also take part in phonics teaching and learning.

At Byerley Park Primary we use a systematic, synthetic phonics programme called Phonics Shed.

Phonics Shed is a narrative driven multi-sensory phonics scheme that is divided into 4 different chapters, with each chapter building on the skills and learning of previous learning.

At Key Stage Two reading is extended and we are reviewing the way that we teach the skills of inference, deduction, prediction and evaluation.

Reception Phonics Stay & Play ~ November 2023

Parents of children in Reception were invited to stay, play & learn all about how Phonics is delivered in Reception. Mrs Bowes shared with them the presentation below and explained the structure of their daily Phonics Shed session.

The Reception children then joined their parents in a carousel of activities that showed how they could make phonics more fun at home. The activities were led by Mrs Bowes, Mrs Dunn & Mrs North from Reception alongside Mrs Dunn from Year 2 and Mrs Pattison.

Reading

Children need to be able to read with understanding, for pleasure and for information. In Key Stage One children are helped and guided towards suitable reading material using a range of home/school reading books to support reading development. As pupils become more independent readers, they are given responsibility for their own choice in reading. All classrooms have their own reading areas. We aim for children to develop a love of reading and encourage children to take books home to read and share with their parents and carers at home.
