Byerley Park Primary School

Curriculum – Mathematics

At Byerley Park Primary School we are committed to providing an inclusive, creative and exciting curriculum based around high quality teaching and learning.

We intend to inspire and ignite the curiosity of our pupils and ensure that the teaching and learning of mathematics in our school allows students to make sense of the world around them, developing their ability to calculate, reason and problem solve. We will support pupils in making connections and using their mathematical skills to support their every-day lives. This includes science, technology, engineering and literacy skills which are key for most forms of employment. At Byerley Park we aim to develop a high-quality mathematics education that provides a foundation for understanding the world, an appreciation for the power and beauty of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

To support children in reaching the aims set out above, we have carefully considered the structure and content of our maths provision. Key areas, such as place value and calculation, are developed at the start of each academic year to ensure children have the foundations for learning across the year in the maths curriculum, and are kept fresh through discrete, dedicated daily sessions. In addition to this, opportunities for pupils to learn and rehearse key facts are regularly provided, in a structured and systematic way. The aim is for our students to develop rapid and automatic recall of key knowledge and skills so that working memory can be used to focus on the higher order skills of reasoning and solving problems.

Using the White Rose scheme as a guide alongside National Curriculum expectations and other high-quality resources, learning opportunities are planned and delivered in a carefully considered sequence to support pupils develop fundamental maths skills that are progressive as they move through school. The way in which we deliver learning has been strategically planned to support pupils in ‘learning more and remembering more’.
